Multimillion-dollar order placed for additional SINCGARS
ITT Industries Inc. has received a $478 million order from the U.S. Army’s Communications Electronics Command for its SINCGARS tactical radio systems. SINCGARS systems are deployed globally with soldiers in active duty forces such as the 82nd Airborne Division as well as with National Guard and Reserve forces. They provide voice communications and data routing on the battlefield, enabling soldiers to plan their operations in a secure environment.
This order is for 73,000 radios under the Army’s SINCGARS Omnibus Contract awarded to ITT's aerospace/communications division in November of 2004. This contract supports U.S. and allied military forces worldwide by enabling them to order radios and ancillary items as needed to support frontline troops. Systems ordered by the Army include those used in fighting vehicles and tanks, as well as manpack radios that travel with infantry forces.
Over the past decade four generations of SINCGARS have been deployed to U.S. forces. This latest order is for the newest-generation radio that includes improved voice and data capabilities. The number of SINCGARS currently deployed worldwide is nearly a quarter-million units. Additional improvements for SINCGARS are in development and include combat identification software that can help to reduce casualties as a result of friendly fire.
