The Philippines likely to receive U.S. tactical radios

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified the U.S. Congress of the possible sale of Harris HF/VHF military radios to the Philippines, along with related equipment and services. The total value of the sale, if all options are exercised, is $96 million. Included are 6356 advanced tactical VHF handheld radios and more than 2,000 20 W HF manpack radios, along with spare parts, training and manuals.

According to the DSCA, the proposed sale is consistent with U.S. interests, as it "helps to improve the security of a friendly country that has been, and continues to be, a important force for political stability and economic progress in the Asia Pacific region."

DSCA said the equipment will assist the Philippines in fulfilling its strategic commitment to the U.S. by strengthening its efforts to destabilize terrorist strongholds within its borders. The radios are also expected to improve internal command and control — particularly in mountainous regions.
