picoChip Will Demo Reference Designs At LTE World Summit

The LTE World Summit next week will include the industry’s first Long-Term Evolution (LTE) reference design demonstration, according to picoChip. The Summit is scheduled for Nov. 17-20 at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London. Attendees registering through picoChip will receive a 25% discount.

The company’s common baseband platforms support true software-defined radio, including LTE system development and early trials. The eNodeB reference design, the PC8618, is supported by the WinHDP2 development board, which has four PC203 devices to host the LTE PHY, and a 600-MHz Wintegra WinMX, which supports the LTE media access controller (MAC) and protocol stack functions. The WinHDP2 is available now.

Additionally, picoChip’s Small Cell Platform (SCP) is being developed specifically to target Home eNodeB systems based upon the PC8608 software reference design. The SCP has two PC203 devices to host the LTE physical layer (PHY) and a 600-MHz PPC405EXr for the MAC and protocol stack development. It will be available in the first quarter of 2009. Both boards support multiple standards, including WiMAX and LTE, providing significant leverage for operators and OEMs looking for a true software-defined baseband hardware platform.

To coincide with LTE World Summit, picoChip has updated its recently published white paper: “LTE takes shape: Fine grained and self organizing.” Authored by picoChip CTO Doug Pulley, the revised document includes several new sections, as well as illustrations to support Pully’s contention that femtocells will be a leading enabler of LTE rollout.
