Tablet Mania Fuels 2011 Display Market Crush

According to stat merchants at IHS iSuppli, the global display industry is in a genuine tizzy trying grind out tablet computers to offset Apple iPad’s stranglehold on the market. The rush to compete will allegedly invoke market disruptions worldwide in the form of shortages and excess inventories. IHS iSuppli research suggests global tablet shipments more than tripling in 2011, rising to 57.6 million units, up from 17.1 million in 2010. Apple retains market dominance with a 70.4% share of tablet shipments while facing hard competition from new rivals: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Co., Research in Motion Ltd., Dell Inc., and others. In terms of other trends to watch out for this year, IHS iSuppli fingers a breakthrough in the manufacturing of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays. It foresees Samsung, LG, and perhaps one or two other display companies driving AMOLEDs deeper into mobile devices as well as AMOLED televisions making their way onto retail shelves. Whether those AMOLED TVs find a home or not is another story.
