Avago Technologies announced a complete RF 802.11 a/b/g/n front-end module. Operating in the 2.4-GHz and 4.9 to 5.9-GHz frequency bands, the fully integrated AFEM-9601 multi-function module is compatible with WLAN standards and optimized for MIMO (multiple-in, multiple out) applications where efficiency and high-performance levels are critical for transmitting large data files, such as video, over wireless networks.

Avago’s new AFEM-9601 targets portable and fixed devices that support IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n WLAN applications. The fully integrated front-end module effectively combines all front-end RF functions: dual linear power amplifiers, dual low-noise amplifiers, dual Tx/Rx switches, diplexer, Tx/Rx filtering and direct CMOS-compatible control and detect. Designed for 3V applications, the AFEM-9601 delivers more than 17 dBm Pout to meet all 802.11 masks. The WiFi module also provides an integrated high directivity detector for load-insensitive, temperature-compensated power detection.

The AFEM-9601 has been developed specifically for the challenging specifications of the portable 802.11n MIMO environment. The spec tradeoffs of power, current, EVM, noise figure and filtering have been balanced to result in a module that allows spec compliance for the designer of WiFi systems. Care has been taken to control harmonic emissions and spectral output to be compatible with FCC testing requirements.

Housed in a 4x  x1.5 mm package using an LTCC substrate, the miniature AFEM-9601 is fully matched for ease in product design and leverages Avago’s proprietary GaAs EpHEMT technology for superior performance across voltage and temperature conditions.

Pricing begins at $1.85 and will be generally available in Q3’08 through Avago’s direct sales channel or worldwide distribution partners. Samples for Avago’s AFEM-9601 will be available in June through Avago’s direct sales channel.
