Worldmax Projects 32-Mbit/s Downlink Rates In 2009

Wireless telecom provider Worldmax has upgraded the capabilities of its commercial service to 5-Mbit/s downlink rates, with an expected increase to 32 Mbits/s in 2009. The upgrade comes after the company completed its network deployment and service improvement plan and careful evaluation of device performance and user experience in a 3.5-GHz environment. The speed upgrade is available to customers through a software download and an adjustment to their subscription service.

The network optimization was performed in close partnership with WiMAX chip partner Beceem. Worldmax said results look so promising that the additional increase was planned. Worldmax owns the national and exclusive 3.5-GHz license for the Dutch market and is the first company in Europe to have realized a ubiquitous network based on the WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) standard providing both indoor and outdoor coverage.

“We have worked very closely with our primary partner Alcatel-Lucent and our strategic chip partner Beceem, and together we have been able to redefine the performance envelope of mobile 3.5-GHz networks,” said Keimpe B. Algra, Worldmax COO and CTO. “Without Beceem and the amazing capabilities of their advanced WiMAX chip, we would not be able to offer this performance upgrade, and we are looking forward to further increase the service capabilities of our network in 2009.”
