XOHM Chooses Beceem Communications Chipset For Mobile WiMAX Network
Sprint Nextel and XOHM have launched the nation’s first Mobile WiMAX network in Baltimore. But these 4G capabilities couldn’t have gone online without Beceem Communications and its BCS200 chipset, which is part of XOHM’s WiMAX USB modem. The BCS200 comprises the high-performance BCSB200 baseband IC and the BCSR200 integrated RFIC to implement a full-featured IEEE 802.16e/WiMAX/WiBRO Wave 2-compliant MS.
The set supports the integration of dual receive chains and a single transmit chain operating in a tightly coupled manner to deliver a cost-effective, low-power SIMO and MIMO MS solution. The BCS200 also implements the entire PHY, MAC, and RF functionality of a Mobile WiMAX terminal.
The BCSB200 baseband IC is a highly integrated, software-programmable, multifunction digital-analog mixed-signal IC that implements IEEE 802.16e scalable OFDMA PHY and MAC functionality. Both the PHY and MAC functionality are implemented using a combination of hardware and software to achieve an optimal balance between cost, power consumption, performance, and flexibility. Further, the advanced features implemented in this chip increase throughput and indoor penetration performance for both mobile and fixed applications.
The BCSR200 radio IC is a direct-conversion transceiver designed for 802.16e WiMAX applications. The IC includes completely independent transmitters and receivers that cover the Broadband Wireless Access bands in 2.x GHz and 3.x GHz. The chip also is optimized to operate with the BCSB200 baseband IC. Terminal implementations based on the BCS200 chipset are planned to interoperate with any WiMAX-certified SISO- or MIMO-capable IEEE 802.16e/WiMAX Mobile basestations.
