XOOM Gives iPad A Run For The Money
The Motorola XOOM On carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $359.92, based on current pricing. It resembles the mid-range iPad with its capacitive touchscreen, 10.1-in. display, battery, and 32 Gbytes of memory. It also beats the iPad with features such as a dual-core apps processor and both front- and rear-facing cameras.
As per research firm IHS iSuppli, the Motorola XOOM On is a good match for Apple’s iPad 3G in terms of materials. It carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $359.92, based on current pricing, compared to about $320 for a 3G iPad with 32 Gbytes of NAND flash memory, based on pricing from April 2010. The XOOM resembles the mid-range iPad with its capacitive touchscreen, 10.1-in. display, battery, and 32 Gbytes of memory (see the figure). On the other hand, the XOOM beats the iPad with features such as a dual-core apps processor and both front- and rear-facing cameras. The XOOM touchscreen module exploits an Atmel mXT1386 touchscreen controller, a 32-bit device capable of registering up to 16 discrete touch points. Again aping the iPad 3G in terms of cost, grand total cost for the XOOM’s memory components is $80.40, or 22.3% of the total BOM. This compares to $67.80 for the equivalent 32-Gbytes model of the iPad.
