You can do it on an iPhone. Amazon readers can do it on their Kindle. But you couldn’t do it on a BlackBerry until now—that is, look words up in a dictionary. Paragon Software Group’s latest product line allows users of the popular BlackBerry to access dictionaries by Merriam-Webster directly on their mobile devices.

Now available for all mobile platforms, the line includes Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition; Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged; Merriam-Webster’s Medical Dictionary; Merriam-Webster’s Pocket; The Merriam-Webster Dictionary; Merriam-Webster’s English-French Dictionary; and Merriam-Webster’s English-Spanish Dictionary.

The original dictionary titles were adapted for the mobile screen and supplemented with new functionality providing fast lookups of definitions. Paragon’s advanced SlovoEd engine compresses even the weightiest content to minimal memory space, occupying just about 25 Mbits on your mobile device. Once installed, the dictionary can be accessed anywhere, anytime, without an Internet connection or additional charges.

The largest and most popular college dictionary, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, includes more than 90,000 entries and 225,000 definitions with more than 10,000 new words and meanings. Its Online Update provides over-the-air program updates. Also, its dictionary database can be installed on flash cards. Hyperlinks cross-reference related articles and directions. And, its Search History shows the last 20 words looked up.

An online dictionary catalog provides one-click access to more Merriam-Webster’s dictionaries available for download directly to your device. Multilingual interface is available in English, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. Finally, no Internet connection is required. Users simply download the dictionary once to their device and use it with no further expense incurred. The software supports all BlackBerry smart phones with OS version 4.2.1 and higher, with the exception of BlackBerry Storm.

The dictionaries are available now. Prices range from $59.95 for the full-blown Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, to as low as $14.95 for the pocket edition.
