ADC combines optimal SFDR performance with low power consumption
Analog Devices is expanding its portfolio of devices targeted at wireless infrastructure applications with the AD9254 14-bit, 150 mega samples per second (Msps) analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The device achieves 83 dBc spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) at 70 MHz while consuming only 430 mW. It has a 50% reduction in power consumption over competing solutions, according to ADI. This combination of high SFDR, low power consumption and small packaging (7 mm x 7 mm 48-lead LFCSP) makes the device suited for a range of wireless infrastructure applications, including WiMAX and picocell base station receivers, as well as ultrasound and handheld instrumentation equipment.
Besides high SFDR, the AD9254 provides a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 72.7 dBFS at 70 MHz input. This enables high-quality conversion of 3G wireless standards including CDMA2000, W-CDMA and TD-SCDMA, reducing power consumption by adhering to the lower voltage levels of each standard. The AD9254's sample-and-hold amplifier maintains excellent performance for input frequencies up to 200 MHz. The device is pin-compatible with the AD9246 and AD9233 ADCs and can be used with ADI's AD8352 driver IC.
The AD9254 is sampling now. It is priced at $55 per unit in 1000-piece quantities. It is packaged in a 7 mm x 7 mm 48-pin lead-free chip scale package (LFCSP). The device is specified over the industrial temperature range of -40ºC to +85ºC .
