Nokia Announces SIM-Based NFC Device

During the opening keynote of the third annual WIMA conference in Monaco, Nokia announced its third fully integrated near-field communication (NFC) device, the Nokia 6216 classic (see the figure). It is the company’s first SIM-based NFC device, enabling operators to build NFC services on the SIM card.

According to Nokia, users will benefit from greater ease of use, more convenient sharing of content like images and audio files, and secure payment and ticketing transactions, all with one tap of the device. The company expects the 6216 to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia says that the 6216 will be among the first commercial devices to comply with operator requirements using the SIM card in connection to secure transactions with NFC. A 6216 equipped with the appropriate applications on the SIM can replace multiple cards now stuffed into users’ wallets, according to the company.

The Nokia 6216 classic provides NFC functionality right on the SIM card, providing users with secure transactions with just a tap of a button.

For example, the SIM card can securely store credit card information. Users simply wave the device in front of a contactless terminal for quick payment and ticketing services. Of course, a compatible NFC SIM card is required for contactless ticketing and payment, as well as a service subscription and installation of the appropriate secure application.

In addition, the 6216 offers 3G connectivity for fast and easy download, Web browsing, and video streaming. It features a 2.0-in. thin-film-transistor (TFT) QVGA color display and a 2-Mpixel digital camera with 8x digital zoom and flash. Its media player supports MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, H.263, and H.264. And, its microSD slot is expandable up to 8 Gbytes.
