Service Provides One-Button Voice Activation For Calls, Texts, And Searches

Tellme Networks now offers the first mobile service that combines content and communications, simplifying how users interact with their phones, according to the company. Unlike other voice-based services, the company says, Tellme allows users to press one button, say what they want, and get it—whether it’s sending a text, making a call, or searching for information. This service will be available for Windows Mobile 6.5 phones this fall.

To activate Tellme, users press the side button on their phone. They can send a text by saying “text” to open a text box, dictating their text message, and saying “send” to send it to anyone in their contact list. Or, they can initiate a call by saying “call” and naming anyone in their contact list. Finally, they can search the Web via Microsoft Live Search by speaking their request, such as “weather in San Francisco, California,” or “Mother’s Day gift ideas.”

According to Tellme Networks, searching for a business on the Apple iPhone requires four touches and more than 20 keystrokes. Phones with Tellme can find the same business with one button push and one verbal command, creating a simpler and more intuitive user experience. The company says its research shows similar results for making calls and sending texts.

More than 70% of respondents to a recent study by Sanderson Studios Inc. said that voice is superior to keypad or touch-based methods for performing common mobile tasks. This includes looking up a business or location (78%), sending a text (72%), placing a call (79%), getting information about movies, traffic, weather, or sports (77%), and getting directions (81%).

Tellme will be available for free on Windows Mobile 6.5 phones this fall. Initially available in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile store, the service also will be available to mobile operators and carriers to embed “on-device” for a voice experience right out of the box.
