Web-Based Service Customizes Mobile Surfing Protection

Content Control 2.0 from Flash Networks enables parents to select which content they consider inappropriate or dangerous for Web-enabled mobile devices. It also allows parents to apply specific filtering for each mobile user. These user customization features transform content control from a basic blacklist service to a revenue-generating solution and key differentiator for mobile operators.

Typical content control solutions use URL filtering, where requests are matched to a pre-existing list of inappropriate URLs and access is either granted or blocked. With the Web-based Content Control 2.0, parents can control Web content according to its subject matter as well as prevent access after bedtime or during school hours.

The system also notifies parents via SMS or e-mail of attempts to view dangerous content categories such as suicide, drugs, or eating disorders. In addition to indicating when blocking or notification should occur, this feature gives parents access to information about where time is spent online, enabling them to initiate an open dialogue with their children instead of just blocking sites.

Additionally, parents can choose to grant or block access to chat, video, and images generated by social media sites. For young children, parents can create a “walled garden” or protected environment by only providing access to a limited number of age-appropriate sites.

Meanwhile, operators can take a more active role in promoting social responsibility, protecting their brand, creating a competitive edge, and building customer loyalty by enabling subscribers to customize content control based on the needs of their own families. Content Control 2.0 is part of the Harmony Mobile Internet Services Gateway, which enables operators to enhance user quality of experience, reduce operational expenses, and manage and monetize access to the open Internet.
