Hittite Microwave Corporation has introduced a 70 dB true rms power detector that is well suited for RF power measurement over the dc to 3.9 GHz frequency range.

Designated as the HMC610LP4E, it is designed to provide wide dynamic range measurement in excess of 70 dB by converting RF signals at its differential input to an accurately scaled linear-in-dB output response that is the equivalent root-mean-square (rms) of the input waveform. This true rms power detector features a ±1 dB dynamic range of 73 dB at 900 MHz, 71 dB at 2.2 GHz. At 2.7 GHz and 3.5 GHz the HMC610LP4E exhibits a ±1 dB dynamic range of 68 dB and 56 dB, respectively, improving upon the closest competition by more than 5 dB.

Temperature stability is ± 0.5 dB error from -40 °C to 85 °C maintained over the dc to 3.9 GHz frequency band. The HMC610LP4E also provides a nominal logarithmic slope of 37 mV/dB and a nominal intercept of -70 dBm for frequencies up to 2 GHz.

Well suited for the measurement of complex modulated waveforms with large, dynamically changing crest factors, the HMC610LP4E output fall time is 500 ns (1.9 V to 0.2 V), while the rise time is approximately 10 ns (0.2 V to 1.9 V). This is ideal for the proper detection of complex waveforms with the QAM, QPSK and OFDM modulation techniques typically employed in high-capacity wireless and wireline communication networks. Tests with single- and multiple-carrier versions of WCDMA, CDMA2000 and IS95 reverse link disclosed that the HMC610LP4E exhibits a typical error of less than 0.3 dB up to input power levels of +5 dBm.

The HMC610LP4E RF input is externally matched to 50 Ohms and the device operates from a +5 V single supply while consuming 65 mA. The power detector is housed in a 4 mm x 4 mm, leadless, surface-mount package and is specified for operation over the -40 to +85 °C temperature range.
