Microwave Technology (MwT) Inc., an IXYS company, recently released two high linearity power amplifier (PA) products for the 802.11 WiFi and the emerging 802.16 WiMax base station applications. The first PA is WPS-495922-02, which operates over 4.9-GHz to 5.9-GHz bandwith 11-dB gain and 32-dBm output power at 1-dB compression point. Based on MwT’s proprietary high linearity MESFET technology, the PA achieves superior error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of 2.5% at 26-dBm output power level under WiMAX test signal (256 carriers and 64 QAM with 2/3 coding factor). The EVM performance also includes 1.6% of accumulated errors from the modulator and driver stages. The adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) is less than -40 dBc at 25 dBm average output power and the third-order intercept point, IP3, is as high as 47 dBm at 22 dBm output power per tone. WPS-495922-02 is pre-matched to 50 Ω for easy cascade. The PA is biased at 7.5-V drain voltage and about 600-mA direct current. The WPS-495922-02 is packaged in MwT 02 package, a low-cost, surface-mount LLC package. The package is lead-free and has a proprietary copper alloy based pallet for good thermal conductivity.

The second part is the WPS 2527LD5-98, which operates over 2.5-GHz to 2.7-GHz band with 10-dB gain and 37-dBm output power at 1-dB compression point. The LDMOS based PA achieves high efficiency of 40% and superior EVM performance of 2.5% at 33-dBm output power level under WiMAX test signal (256 carriers and 64 QAM with 2/3 coding factor). The ACPR is less than -40 dBc at 33 dBm average output power and the third-order intercept point, IP3, is 50 dBm at 33-dBm output power per tone. WPS-2527LD5-98 is pre-matched to 50 Ω with input and output load impedance then greater 10 Ω. The PA is biased with 26 V of drain voltage and 100 mA of quiescent direct current. WPS-2527LD5-98 is packaged in an industry-standard metal flange package with excellent heat sinking properties.
