NoiseWave has announced the availability of the NW-Diode series broadband noise diodes. The noise diodes offer a symmetrical white Gaussian noise voltage distribution while maintaining a flat power spectral density vs. frequency response.
The series covers the frequency range 0.1 Hz to 11 GHz with high output ENR and is available from stock. Several versions are available including an axial-leaded version for audio frequency applications, a surface-mount version for higher-frequency coverage, and a ceramic package for high microwave frequency operation.

Garmin International Inc. has announced a GPS navigation system for customers using Palm OS-based personal digital assistants (PDA) or smart phones with Bluetooth. This GPS package includes proven navigation software with feature-rich points of interest and Garmin's GPS 10, a sensor that receives location data from GPS and transmits that information to mobile devices enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology.
The GPS 10 Deluxe package includes MapSource City Navigator North America mapping software, which offers nearly six million points of interest and detailed street-level mapping of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ. The GPS 10 Deluxe has an estimated retail price of $249.99.

u-blox AG has released firmware 5.00 that features spectacular navigation, SuperSense weak signal performance and unmatched coverage in the most difficult urban canyons, even when the antenna is located inside vehicles with coated windows.
Automotive applications will benefit from outstanding urban canyon performance, especially in all multipath, no-direct-line-of-sight situations. Mobile devices will be mostly unharmed from in-band jamming signals that are emitted by transmitting devices such as WLAN, Bluetooth or mobile phones in their proximity.
u-blox firmware version 5.00 is available as binary images for Flash-based ANTARIS and ANTARIS 4 GPS receivers.

Designed for home and small offices, Zen improves indoor signal strength of cell phones, PDAs and other mobile devices across the entire PCS band (1900 MHz).
Zen incorporates key, patented technology from the Spotwave commercial products to ensure the best performance for the user while protecting the integrity of the carrier's network. Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced the availability of GENESYS 2005, a release of its RF and microwave design software. The version includes a time-domain simulator, frequency planner, mixer synthesis tool and revamped user interface that help speed circuit simulation and wireless communications design.
Contactless USB reader
ASK has launched the RDR 400 series of contactless USB readers, designed for performance, security and ergonomics. RDR 400 readers are suitable for contactless logical/physical access control, identity, banking and PC-based applications.
Based on CPL 400 couplers, the RDR 400 series is high speed, low cost, multistandard and multi-application; its RF interface allows RDR 400 readers to support all current ISO dual interface/contactless cards and contactless tickets.
RDR 400 passed e-passport Interfest interoperability tests that took place in November in Singapore. These tests involved 124 different passports complying with ISO14443 Type A or B standards from 28 countries to be tested on 40 readers. ASK's reader reached the best performances in terms of interoperability and communication speed.
The model CEC-1008 hybrid coupler from Communications and Energy combines two MMDS/ITFS channel groups into one antenna output. This permits the combination of two digital-ready adjacent-channel combiners to one antenna.
The compact coupler combines any two groups of alternate channels. Spurious emissions generated during the combining process are absorbed by a (dummy load) terminator. The coupler has an insertion loss of 3.0 dB and a passband of 2.0 GHz to 4.0 GHz. Power handling is 1600 W peak per port. VSWR is 1.23:1
Connectors are 7/8th EIA flange and CPR-340 waveguide flange. The coupler measures 7 inches × 3 inches × 2 inches and weighs five pounds. Price and delivery are $1875 and two weeks.

Adapter and hub reference designs
Fabless semiconductor supplier WiQuest Communications Inc. has unveiled two products based on the certified wireless USB technology from the USB Implementers Forum. The DWA four-port Hub and HWA dongle reference design kits are based on WiQuest's recently announced WQST110 and WQST101 UWB chipset. These reference design kits will enable equipment manufacturers to build complete device wire adapter (DWA) and host wire adapter (HWA) solutions from a pair of robust reference platforms. Both product configurations provide wireless performance with standard WiMedia data rates from 53 Mbps to 480 Mbps.
WiQuest's HWA dongle, based on certified wireless USB, is a cost-effective, highly integrated design that provides wireless UWB high-speed services to existing wired USB devices. The HWA dongle reference design is also suitable for embedded designs. WiQuest's Hub, also based on certified wireless USB, is a cost-effective design for mobile and portable systems to communicate wirelessly with standard USB peripherals including printers, scanners, hard disk drives, keyboards and mice.
Both reference design kits include hardware and software. The hardware portion includes a working adapter sample along with schematics, layout source files, a detailed bill-of-material, design manual, user's guide and a quick-start guide. Depending on the particular configuration, the software package includes HWA driver/firmware and DWA firmware. It also includes a Microsoft Windows-based utility that sopports device discovery, field upgrade functionality, comprehensive diagnostics and the newly defined wireless USB association models.
802.11n wireless LAN
Atheros Communications Inc. has launched its XSPAN family of wireless LAN (WLAN) technologies. The AR5008 is the first series of chipsets to deliver XSPAN benefits. The AR5008 solutions deliver six times the throughput of 802.11g and 802.11a/g products at extended range and with greater reliability.
With XSPAN, Atheros introduces Signal-Sustain Technology (SST). The AR5008 delivers up to 300 Mbps physical data rate with real end-user throughput of 150 Mbps to 180 Mbps, and achieves, on average, 50% greater sustained throughput at range than 2 × 2 MIMO systems.
The series of two-chip solutions is based on the world's only triple-radio chip paired with a baseband and media access controller (MAC) chip. The AR5008 series supports PCI and PCIe (PCI Express) host interfaces.
Atheros also provides its customers with end-to-end reference designs for wireless access points and routers, CardBus and mini card adapters. With its highly scalable architecture, Atheros' technology is available in multiple configuration options, including 2 × 2, 2 × 3 and 3 × 3, offering physical data rates up to 600 Mbps and supporting a range of market segments and wireless applications.
Coaxial adapter kit
Electronika International Inc. has released a universal coaxial adapter kit designed to help designers to connect easily to various connector configurations. In wireless design and development, standard and reverse polarity type connectors are used in various telecommunications systems. Hence, to alleviate the problem of quick interconnection, Electronika has introduced the EI2205-KIT. This adapter kit includes reverse polarity and standard coaxial adapters in BNC, TNC, SMA, N, MMCX, UHF and RCA. These adapters are made of brass/stainless steel with gold plating. The kit comes with 40 adapters. High precision adapter kits are also available up to 40 GHz.
Mini-Circuits' LFCN low-pass filters and HFCN high-pass filters deliver high rejection outside the passband and virtually eliminate PC board space demand. The company offers a broad range of models with features starting with a tiny 0.12 inch × 0.06 inch hermetically sealed package.

LDMOS transistors for WiMAX base stations
With its seventh-generation high-voltage (HV7) RF LDMOS technology, Freescale Semiconductor has achieved the RF power amplifier performance required for use in WiMAX base stations operating in the 3.5 GHz band.
Freescale, which offers a portfolio of 12 V GaAs Pseudomorphic high-electron mobility transistor (PHEMT) products, plans to continue development of high-voltage GaAs PHEMT technology that will result in higher-power GaAs devices for use in WiMAX system designs, as well as other applications between 2 GHz and 6 GHz.
The MRF7S38075H is a 75 W P1dB RF transistor capable of 42 dBm (16 W) average power while meeting WiMAX performance requirements over the 3.5 GHz band. In addition, samples of 40 W and 10 W P1 dB 3.5 GHz devices are expected this month. These three advanced LDMOS devices round out Freescale's portfolio of RF power transistors targeting the emerging WiMAX/WiBRO bands at 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz.
MAC with integrated XFI
Ample Communications' Redhawk is sampling to customers. Redhawk is a two-port 10 Gbps Ethernet intelligent MAC with embedded XFI SerDes and multiprotocol congestion management technology.
Ample has incorporated the Redhawk onto an evaluation platform that provides customers with a dual-port card that can be used either as a full-rate, one- or two-port 10 Gbps Ethernet system, or as a dual-port oversubscribed system with statistical multiplexing. Two Redhawks can also be cascaded with this evaluation platform to demonstrate a four-port oversubscribed 10 Gb Ethernet solution. The Redhawk evaluation platform allows customers to evaluate network side XFP, XENPAK and X2 optics, as well as XAUI and SPI-4.2 system side interfaces.
The Ethernet evaluation platform offers system-side footprint compatibility with Ample's existing SPI-4.2-based network interface cards, thus providing customers with flexibility to easily develop a system for multirate Ethernet applications just by changing the interface card.
Sensing and Security
Chipcon AS has launched the CC1110 system-on-chip (SoC) solution that includes a sub-1 GHz RF multichannel RF transceiver and a single-cycle 8051 MCU. The CC1110's integrated AES-128 co-processor makes it useful for wireless payment systems since strong encryption can be done on the chip. This can improve security compared to having a separate cryptography unit.
The SoC includes a sub-1GHz RF multi-channel transceiver, 32 kB of self-programmable Flash memory, 4 kB of RAM, a low-power single-cycle 8051 MCU and many powerful peripheral modules. All of this fits inside a 6 mm × 6 mm QLP-36 package. The SoC is pin- and software-compatible with the recently released CC2510 2.4 GHz SoC, making it easier for Chipcon's customers to offer 2.4 GHz and sub-1 GHz products.
The CC1110 MCU is a low-power single-cycle 8051 providing up to 26 MIPS. In addition, Chipcon has included a powerful five-channel DMA controller that can handle data transfers between peripherals and memory without CPU intervention to avoid the weakness of the 8051 core in moving data. A wide set of peripherals has been included: an eight-channel, eight-bit to 14-bit ADC, an AES-128 crypto co-processor, two UART/SPI interfaces, three eight-bit timers and one 16-bit timer with PWM capabilities. The AES-128 co-processor can be used to encrypt and authenticate the data so that this vital data is not tampered with or decoded.
The CC1110 is supported by a set of development tools, including the IAR C compiler with full in-system debugging support, an extensive set of libraries and examples, and an upcoming universal packet sniffer that can be configured to support any protocol.

DSP multimedia capabilities
LSI Logic has collaborated with 4i2i and TIVR Communications to provide hardware and software solutions for the consumer electronics market that are compatible with ZSP signal processor solutions. The combination of the power, performance and cost efficiencies of the ZSP cores with the multimedia systems and codecs offerings from these new Solution Partners enables SoC designers to get to market quickly with the latest audio and video technology.
By adding 4i2i and TIVR to the ZSP Solution Partner Program, consumer electronic SoC designers will have access to a comprehensive set of audio technologies (aacPlus, WMA, MP3, etc.), as well as the latest video compression standards (H.263, H.264, MPEG-4, etc.) required by a number of emerging multimedia applications.

Radiated susceptibility test system
AR Worldwide RF/Microwave Instrumentation has completed work on a test system that integrates five amplifiers, two system controllers, five antennas, a computer-controlled antenna mast and a field monitor. The SP1012 system houses the equipment in two air-conditioned, EMI-shielded equipment racks. The system is designed to meet the customers' requirements for MIL-STD 461 testing.
The completely integrated system includes two system controllers (model SC1000M1 and model SC1000M4) that allow manual and remote signal routing of RF signals both to and from up to seven amplifiers/loads, including feedback from dual directional couplers.
Dual-channel PCI analyzers
Acqiris offers its model AP240 and AP235 dual-channel reconfigurable PCI analyzers with a advanced peak analysis and time-to-digital conversion (TDC) firmware. Peak-TDC firmware makes the analyzers useful for use in systems where signal bursts are acquired and analyzed. This includes time-of-flight and imaging applications such as time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS), ultrasound, radar, lidar and sonar.
The PCI analyzers combine high-performance front-end analog-to-digital conversion with up to 1 GHz bandwidth (500 MHz for the AP235), and reconfigurable on-the-fly processing from the onboard FPGA-based data-processing unit (DPU). With PeakTDC firmware, the analyzers' DPU isolates peaks from waveform data obtained at up to 2 Gsps (1 Gsps for the AP235), and transfer this peak data in the form of time and/or amplitude to the host PC.
Acqiris' AP240 and AP235 PCI analyzer platforms incorporate the proprietary XLFidelity and JetSpeed ADC chipsets and feature front-end signal conditioning with calibrated gain and offset ranges, as well as up to 1 GHz bandwidth and dual-channel capability with synchronous acquisition up to a 1 Gsps sampling rate (up to 2 Gsps in single-channel mode). Each channel has an independent digitizer and separate programmable processing using the latest FPGA technology, which enables the analyzer platforms to be easily reconfigured to perform a variety of onboard real-time signal processing.
The AP240 represents the highest performance with 1 GHz front-end bandwidth, 1 Gsps ADCs, and up to 12 MB of memory (48 MB optional). The AP235 uses a similar architecture as the AP240, but offers a more economical package for lower-frequency applications. The unit's front-end bandwidth is 500 MHz and the maximum sampling rate is 500 Msps. For single-channel applications, both cards can interleave their two ADC channels, doubling the maximum sampling rate (2 Gsps for the AP240 and 1 Gsps for the AP235 on either input, software selectable) and overall timing resolution.
The cards are PCI-compliant and can be installed directly in a full-length PCI slot on a PC running under Windows, Linux or VxWorks. The PCI bus allows data processed by the cards to be transferred to the host PC at sustained rates of up to 100 Mbps. The cards can be controlled over the PCI bus or directly from the front panel through Acqiris' unique Ctrl I/O system. Ctrl I/O provides two analog connectors for clock/reference and trigger signals, as well as four digital lines for monitoring the cards' status or configuration.

Bluetooth test instrument
Anritsu Company has introduced the MT8852B Bluetooth test set, the first test instrument with both Bluetooth enhanced data rate (EDR) and adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) testing capability. EDR testing capability is critical, as sales of products with Bluetooth interfaces are estimated to exceed 10 million a week with the introduction of this standard.
The MT8852B performs radio layer measurements defined in the Bluetooth Revision 2.0 EDR standard, along with basic rate measurements, from a single “RUN” button key press. To verify reliable connections with other Bluetooth products, the MT8852B performs transmitter EVM and receiver sensitivity tests at the higher data rates associated with EDR. Additionally, the MT8852B can perform AFH tests to determine device performance in the presence of interfering signals, such as those from WLAN, DECT phones and microwave ovens. The MT8852B has a starting price of $24,000 and is available in eight weeks.
Time and Frequency
High-frequency crystal oscillator
NEL Frequency Controls Inc. has released an ultrahigh-frequency crystal oscillator that includes TCXO capability of 2 ppm over temperature. The oscillator is available at frequencies up to 2.4 GHz with differential sine, DPECL or LVDS outputs. This frequency control solution is suitable for high-speed digital designs where signal integrity is critical. The surface-mount package measures 9 mm × 14 mm.
Typical phase noise performance for 1 GHz is -135 dBc at 10 kHz. RMS random jitter performance is less than 1 psec, from 12 kHz to 10 MHz. Stabilities are from +/-2 ppm over a temperature range of 0°C to 70°C. The ultrahigh-frequency crystal oscillator undergoes the rigors of NEL's HALT/ HASS reliability program. It is available in 3.3 V and 2.5 V versions.

SMD quartz crystals
Fox Electronics has expanded its range of low-profile, high-frequency fundamental-mode SMD quartz crystals. The FD series crystals are useful for portable applications or application that require high-reliability frequency control in limited space, including laptop computers, pocket LAN adapters, PCMCIA, disk drives and wireless applications.
The FD crystal measures just 7.5 mm × 5 mm, with a profile of 1.1 mm and offersan expanded frequency range of 8 MHz to 200 MHz. The crystal has a frequency tolerance of ± 50 ppm; a frequency stability of ± 50 ppm; and an operating temperature of -10 °C (+14 °F) to +60 °C (+140 °F). The FD crystal is available with an optional tolerance and stability of 10 ppm for telecommunications and other tight tolerance applications. Pricing for a 200 MHz FD crystal is $12.35 in quantities of 1000.
Low-power CMOS broadband tuner
Freescale Semiconductor has introduced a 3.3 V single-chip CMOS broadband silicon tuner designed to reduce power, cost and complexity for a wide range of home entertainment appliances. Addressing the rapidly growing set-top box (STB) and analog/digital TV tuner markets, the MC44S803 tuner is optimized for analog and digital cable STB, digital TV, cable modem and terrestrial STB applications.
The MC44S803 tuner supports flexible power-consumption modes, enabling power to be adjusted from less than 700 mW to 900 mW to meet various system performance requirements. The device dissipates 700 mW (typical) in the low-power mode. For particular markets, the typical power is 800 mW (digital cable), 850 mW (analog cable), and 900 mW (analog terrestrial). The MC44S803 also offers a programmable power-down mode with fast start-up, enabling further power savings.
The MC44S803 device tunes 48 MHz to 861 MHz RF signals and converts them to an IF signal of 30 MHz to 50 MHz. An on-chip IF amplifier enhances the device's power efficiency, and two on-chip IF outputs support systems with multiple demodulators (digital demodulator and one analog TV demodulator). The MC-44S803's capabilities include a wide gain control range (less than 80 dB AGC range), a choice of analog or digital gain control and the ability to switch between two analog AGC controls for dual demodulator systems. The MC44S803 has a noise figure of 7.5 dB. The MC44S803 offers a choice of industry-standard I2C or SPI interfaces for easy programming and configuration control.
