ESD protection for HDMI connections

STMicroelectronics has enlarged its portfolio of ultralow-capacitance protection ICs for the high-definition video market. The device allows a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) to operate at full HDMI speed of 1.65 Gbps and 3.2 Gbps, with full 15 kV contact and air electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. The HDMIULC6-4SC6 is a monolithic, application-specific device that provides complete rail-to-rail protection of four data lines without compromising signal integrity.

Protecting high-speed data ports is challenging. Any capacitive loading introduced by protection devices can significantly degrade the signal integrity. This is significant at the high data rates required by HDMI connections in computer and consumer electronics. Previous solutions on the market typically presented a capacitive loading of several pico-Farads, which is high enough to require designers to make difficult trade-offs between the level of protection and the resulting signal degradation at typical working data rates.

The ultralow line capacitance (0.6 pF) of the HDMIULC6-4SC6 provides a new level of performance. Designers can protect these high-speed interfaces against 15 kV air and contact discharges, above IEC 61000-4-2 level 4 standard, while minimizing distortion of the HDMI signal.

The ultrahigh cut-off frequency of 5.3 GHz guarantees data integrity. The HDMIULC6-4SC6 offers better impedance matching (0.015 pF vs. 0.04 pF), low leakage current (0.5 µA maximum), and minimal channel imbalance, signal skew and crosstalk (0.007 pF vs. 0.13 pF).

The device is compatible with other high-speed interfaces such as IEEE 1394a/b, USB2.0, Ethernet links and video lines. The footprint of the HDMIULC6-4SC6 is compatible with ST's USBLC6-4SC6 and DVIULC6-4SC6 ESD protection devices for USB 2.0 and DVI ports, respectively, allowing easy board upgrades.

Housed in an SOT23-6L package, the HDMIULC6-4SC6 is in full production and costs $0.25 in quantities of 2500 pieces.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' Platinum Dragon high-power LED produces white light at 75 lm from an operating current of 700 mA (30 lm/W). Potential efficiencies range from 30 lumens to 50 lumens per Watt depending on actual application drive current.

The Platinum Dragon is a high-performance LED-emitting maximum light from the smallest possible source. Additionally, it has the same design and dimensions as the Golden Dragon package — only 1.8 mm height — but can withstand twice the input and a higher operating current. FreeWave Technologies has released the FGRIO Modbus system, a communications protocol, and the Solar Power Kit, which allows for significantly reduced set-up time for its radio systems.

The FGRIO Modbus multipoint network enables direct analog and digital wireless connections to all FGRIO functions and eliminates the need for wire between the host and the RTU. The radio provides cost savings for wire replacement and reliable data communications. FGRIO Modbus master radios supports more I/O points of access — with up to 246 slave radios. CDM Electronics is offering phase-stable cable assemblies using Times Microwaves Systems' PhaseTrack -210 cables with TF4 dielectric technology. This dielectric is a flouropolymer material process developed for employment in RF and microwave applications requiring an extremely linear phase-temperature characteristic while addressing system designers' demands for flexible cable. The cables boast phase change with temperature of < 1.5 ppm/°C (-55 °C to +85 °C), and will not develop a Teflon “knee” as they do not undergo the change in dielectric constant and abrupt change in electrical length that LD-PTFE cables experience at normal room ambient (approximately +18 °C/+65 °F) conditions. As they additionally withstand repeated flexure while remaining within tight electrical specifications, the assemblies are an alternative to LD- PTFE, SiO2 (silicon dioxide) or other conventional cables.

Featuring triple shield construction to provide shielding effectiveness of better than -100 dB, the cables' outside diameter measures 0.210 in. The 50 Ω impedance cables have a minimum bend radius of 1.00 in. (25.4 mm). They typically measure 0.14 dB per foot at 2 GHz, 0.39 dB per foot at 10 GHz, 0.59 dB per foot at 18 GHz, and yield a low 1.35:1 VSWR. Phase stability with bending is 1° at 18 GHz. Their operating voltage is 2500 V (1000 V with SMA connectors), whereas cables' operating temperature range is -55 °C to +125 °C.
