3G Dev Kit Adds GSM-Based UMTS Radio Support
The 3G Dev Kit for the Texas Instruments OMAP35x evaluation module (EVM) and Microsoft Windows CE 6 operating system (OS) from Bsquare Corp. now supports UMTS/EDGE/GPRS/GSM embedded radios. The kit includes the radio, pre-integrated Windows CE six-radio interface layer (RIL) software, and an interface board to connect the embedded radio to the TI OMAP35x EVM along with associated drivers.
With Bsquare’s off-the-shelf solution, the company says, OEMs can immediately start developing data-based applications such as digital signage, vending machines, point-of-service devices, and data collection terminals with Web browsing and seamless access to e-mail, the office, or the Internet. In fact, Bsquare demonstrated the 3G Wireless Dev Kit with the Sierra Wireless MC8790 embedded radio module and the TI OMAP35x at the CTIA Wirless 2009 show in Las Vegas earlier this month.
The kit now ships in both CDMA (certified for EVDO Rev A) and GSM (certified for UMTS/EDGE/GPRS) flavors, enabling OEMs to incorporate 3G data connectivity in their TI OMAP35x processor-based designs to support connectivity across all types of 3G networks. It significantly reduces technical risks, Bsquare says, and saves up to 60% of the time typically required to develop and test 3G radio functionality on an embedded device.
