Based on the company’s portfolio of 16- and 32-bit PIC microcontrollers, Microchip Technology’s Accessory Development Starter Kits for Android help designers develop accessories for Google’s Android platform (see the figure). Versions of the platform¾2.3.4, 3.1, and later¾include a unique framework that allows apps to communicate directly with an accessory interfacing with a smart phone or tablet via USB. The kits include a development board and a software library. Example accessory applications include automotive, audio docks, remote controls, data backup, fitness/health, and business. A PIC24F-based kit (the DM240415) is available for $79.99 at www.microchip.com/get/2Q3F. A PIC32 kit (the DM320412) should appear in the third quarter, also for $79.99. The software library works with both kits and is available now as a free download from www.microchip.com/get/522D.
