Femtocell Application Supports Location-Based Interfaces On Android Phones

Intrinsyc Software International and Ubiquisys have teamed up to develop UX-Zone, a femtocell application that automatically changes the appearance of Android phone interfaces as users enter their home or office. The application incorporates femtocell presence triggers from the Ubiquisys FemtoApps initiative.

UX-Zone enhances the standard Android user interface by switching themes to reflect the phone’s location. For instance, when arriving home, the phone switches to the femtocell, and a “home” theme instantly appears. The theme doesn’t just look different. It can have new icons for high-bandwidth entertainment services like video streaming, social networking, and home network integration, taking advantage of the fast low-cost data provided by the femtocell.

Once the user leaves home, the interface returns to normal, and the icons for high-bandwidth applications that may not be suitable for the outside network disappear. Once the user arrives at the office, a new range of enterprise application icons may appear on a new “office” interface designed for business productivity. Accordingly, a single, flexible Android device can be simultaneously tuned for home, mobile, and work.

Potential uses reach beyond the home or office. For example, it could be used in museums to change interfaces to provide information on exhibits. It also could be used in stores to provide consumers with information about products and offers. UX-Zone enables mobile operators to brand just about any mobile experience, triggering applications automatically without any buttons to press or passwords to enter.
