MeeGo Unveils v1.0 Software Platform For Netbooks

The MeeGo community has announced the project release of MeeGo v1.0 for netbooks. Developed as an open-source Linux project, MeeGo combines Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo into a single platform for netbooks and entry-level desktops, handheld computing and communications devices, in-vehicle infotainment devices, connected TVs, and media phones (see the figure). According to Imad Sousou, director of the Intel Open Source Technology Center, v1.0 provides a stable core foundation for application development and a rich user experience for netbooks.

New releases will follow every six months. Scheduled for October, MeeGo v1.1 will support touch-based devices. In June, the MeeGo community will begin releasing various components in the v1.1 development tree, which is now open, in addition to opening the development of the Handset User Experience. The community also is now releasing the MeeGo application programming interface (API), which includes Qt 4.6, the MeeGo software development kit (SDK) with an integrated API, and other operating-system (OS) tools.

The MeeGo SDK focuses on netbooks. However, the early developer release of its next version scheduled for June will support touch-based devices like handsets and tablets. The MeeGo Netbook User Experience includes a visually rich user experience, Sousou says, building on the latest open-source technologies. It also provides instant access to the user’s synchronized calendar, tasks, appointments, recently used files, and real-time social networking updates through the home screen. In fact, it aggregates the user’s social networking content and puts all activities on one screen for easy interaction and updates.

The Netbook User Experience also integrates Google Chrome, while Google Chromium is provided as well. The MeeGo Handset User Experience will use the Fennec Mozilla browser. Meanwhile, the Netbook User Experience’s e-mail, calendar, and media player applications are designed to be easy to use. It’s additionally optimized for power and performance and is available in 16 languages, including Japanese, Korean, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and English.

open-source MeeGo development platform promises a visually rich user experience for mobile devices such as netbooks by synchronizing calendar and other tasks, aggregating social media content, and improving browsing.
