OEM Program Brings Real-Time Web Apps To Any Mobile Phone
With the KalaidaLive software development kit (SDK) from iSkoot, handset manufacturers can add real-time mobile Internet functionality to any handset with only a small investment and minimal impact on operator networks, according to the company. Its industry-first client-server architecture concentrates all service logic in the network and delivers Web services to the handset over a carrier-friendly, data-optimized connection. The SDK was designed for simplicity, scalability, adaptability, carrier-grade robustness, and support for existing open standards.
While mobile phones are always connected to the carrier network, most phones can’t receive live updates or properly access Web applications. KalaidaLive enables all phones to access the same server platform as iSkoot’s Notifier application, so any phone can receive live Web updates. The SDK also provides traffic control and shared intelligence for the host of separate applications currently competing for handset resources, bandwidth, and network capacity, greatly enhancing the user experience, iSkoot says.
Also, the company’s OEM Program offers mobile device manufacturers a fast track to developing affordable handsets that bring access and live updates for popular Web services like Facebook, instant messaging, e-mail, Twitter, and other social media to mobile users. It packages the patent-pending KalaidaLive mobile client into an SDK available to third parties, making installing and provisioning new applications easy, according to iSkoot.
With KalaidaLive, handsets with build-and-materials costs as low as $60 or less can connect to multiple Internet services and data sources simultaneously, offering an experience previously restricted to high-end devices designed for Web connections. Its persistent connection to iSkoot’s notification server listens for updates from the Web services the subscriber uses. Once information has been retrieved, the notification server uses this connection to return all relevant new and cached information. A user-sensitive content retrieval system optimizes the process for bandwidth efficiency. The KalaidaLive server can rapidly provision new applications and manage authentication and provisioning as well.
