Compact antenna enables slim handset designs

Pulse, a Technitrol company, has launched an internal mobile TV antenna family at the Electronica trade show in Munich, Germany, this week. Pulse’s DVB-H, MediaFLO, and DMB-S antennas are so thin and light that mobile TV applications can now be incorporated into small mobile handsets. The antennas are suitable for all form factors such as bar, monoblock, and slide and meet the high-performance mobile TV standards.

The DVB-H EU 470-750 MHz antenna is one of the thinnest mobile TV antennas, available at 45 mm x 6.0 mm x 7 mm and 1.35 grams in weight. It’s designed to meet tough durability requirements. Mechanical connection to the handset is simple, using just a few screws and an RF cable. It has a coaxial cable feed with I-PEX connector. The excellent performance is guaranteed by integrating a matching network to the antenna element. The matching network integration secures performance in all handset form factors and when using different antenna installation sites. The antenna radiators and matching network are designed to reduce reception from interfering signals, an essential feature in all multi-radio applications where strong signals, such as GSM, are constantly interfering with the DVB-H receiver.

Compact and low profile, the 719 MHz MediaFLO antenna is designed for very low frequencies. The unique antenna pattern enables optimal antenna miniaturization without compromising performance. The antenna size is 10 mm x 3.2 mm x 4 mm and only weighs 0.6 grams. As high as 2 dBi gain and 70% radiation efficiency can be reached. The MediaFLO antenna is built on ceramic technology which provides selectivity, isolation, and immunity to user hand-effect.

The 2.6 GHz DMB-S ceramic chip antenna is just 3.2 mm x 1.6 mm x 1.1 mm and weighs 0.03 grams. The use of a miniature standard PCB footprint offers easy implementation on any handset or device while maintaining the highest performance. The same antenna structure is also suitable for other L-band mobile TV standards, as in 1.6 and 1.4 GHz applications. It is surface-mount device (SMD)-compatible, a competitive catalog product, available in tape-and-reel packaging, and RoHS-compliant.

Pulse's DVB-H, MediaFLO, and DMB-S antennas meet most mobile TV standards and are compatible with terrestrial and satellite solutions.
