Ultralow-noise JCA amplifiers
A line of ultralow-noise JCA amplifiers from Endwave Defense Systems includes more than 20 new models available to cover many of the popular microwave frequency bands. Narrowband models can be optimized for sub 0.5 dB noise figures over 100 MHz to 200 MHz sub-bands, with broadband multi-octave noise figure performance less than 1 dB maximum for C-band frequencies and below. Higher-frequency models are available upon request.
This performance uses Endwave's JCA brand amplifier building blocks and incorporates proprietary matching techniques. In addition to low-noise characteristics, cost efficiencies have also been achieved due to minimal touch-and-tune time. The engineering approach also results in a variety of end-use advantages. They can be employed in narrowband situations, such as a GPS receiver, or in an electronic surveillance system, where several octaves of bandwidth may be necessary. As a result of their flexibility and ultra low-noise performance and reliability, they are useful when system engineers are looking to improve radar sensitivity, increase dynamic range, and lower reception thresholds.

The FP-50 is a solarpowered LED illumination system from Carmanah. With the electronics, batteries and solar module enclosed as a compact, self-contained enclosure, the FP-50 can be installed quickly with minimal technical expertise. Several external LED luminaire options are available and the FP-50 can be configured to power more than one luminaire at the same time.
The FP-50 is ideal for general illumination applications, including area floodlighting, perimeter lighting, security lighting and sign lighting. The FP-50 provides reliable, high-performance lighting wherever it is required — quickly and without the costs associated with connecting to a grid-based power supply.
The FP-50 is configured to automatically turn on at dusk and off at dawn. Other operating profiles, such as motion sensor activation, are also available. Using Carmanah's MICROSOURCE energy management system (EMS), the FP-50 automatically adjusts its performance to ensure year-round reliability under nearly all types of weather and environmental conditions. For light output, the FP-50 uses LED-based luminaires; these fixtures are shockproof, vibration-proof, watertight and designed to operate for up to 100,000 hours (more than 20 years of daily operation) before replacement.
The FP-50 intelligently adapts to the solar environment where it is installed, greatly extending system performance and reliability while reducing component size and cost. Specialized temperature-compensated charging software and electronics optimize the battery charge levels for the FP-50 over the course of each day, depending on the available solar power. As the FP-50's battery system discharges over the course of the night, low-voltage LED driver electronics ensure that the LED luminaire receives a constant drive level.
Instrument and control switches
Series 24G instrument and control switches from Electroswitch are designed to withstand the rigors of military applications. The basic blade and terminal configuration allows multiple contacts in the same deck, and a single switch can have up to 10 decks (20 poles) and eight positions. Switching action can be detent or spring-return. Angle of throw is 45°. Waterproof mounts are available.
Series 24G switches are available with a choice of electrical ratings: 20 A/500 V (continuous), 20 A/125 Vac resistive (inductive), 10 Vac to 250 Vac resistive (inductive), 5 A/500 Vac resistive (inductive), and 0.4 A to 350 Vdc resistive (inductive). Rotors (movable contacts) are made of silver-overlay phosphor bronze, stators (stationary contacts) are silver-overlay copper, and spacers are glass-filled alkyd.
Two standard contact configurations are available. In the most common arrangement, used in all control switches and for any other applications requiring two or three positions, there are two separate and independent contacts in each deck. The second standard configuration is useful in tap, transfer, and selector switches for metering and other applications requiring three or more “ON” positions.
Modular design permits literally millions of custom configurations, but pre-configured, application-specific models available include a variety of voltmeter transfer switches, ammeter transfer switches, wattmeter transfer switches, a wattmeter reversing switch, a power factor switch, a synchronizing switch, a motor control switch, a temperature meter transfer switch, a circuit breaker trip switch, and circuit breaker control switches. Strap jumpers (silver-plated brass) are available for adjacent contacts, and wire-and-lug assemblies are available for same-deck or deck-to-deck jumpering. Nameplates can be standard, waterproof, target-style, or target-style with a pull-to-lock option, and can be engraved. Many models are available with a choice of handle styles: oval, round-knurled, or pistol grip.
Standard series 24G switches are shipped with mounting hardware for panels up to

The direction-finding (DF) antenna from Astron Wireless is a compact ship-board or platform-mounted array of HF, VHF and UHF elements assembled and networked to perform direction-finding operations. The HESA platform provides a flexible system for configuring multiple-antenna elements in a small form factor.
Most surveillance applications typically require highly sensitive signal capture requirements using multiple frequencies. By networking various elements and their associated electronics such as amplifiers, multiple frequencies can be co-located. The Astron Wireless HESA technology provides an environment that optimizes antenna and system efficiency, leading to greater signal capture and reduced error rates.
Heat sink attachment system
Advanced Thermal Solutions' (ATS) maxiGRIP, a heat sink attachment system for mounting heat sinks to flip chips, BGAs and other components, has passed MIL-STD-810 shock testing and unpackaged drop testing. Shock and vibration testing was performed and certified by National Technical Systems Inc. (NTS).
The system features a plastic frame clip that snaps securely around a component's perimeter. A stainless steel spring clip runs though the heat sink's fin field and fastens securely to the plastic frame. The spring clip is easily removed to allow a heat sink to be detached and re-attached without damaging the component.
There is no chance of over- or under-tightening the sink to the processor's surface or having the heat sink pop out during transport, installation or shock and vibration. Also, because there is no need to bore holes into the board to secure the heat sink, there is decidedly more space for circuit traces on the PC board.
In addition to MIL-STD-810 shock testing and unpackaged drop testing, NTS tested and certified maxiGRIP in accordance with Telcordia GR-63-core office vibration and ETSI 300 019 transportation vibration standards. The system is available for a range of heat sinks and components sizes and prices are below $8.00 in production quantities.
