Virginia Tech selects UPS for DARPA Urban Challenge
Team VictorTango from Virginia Tech has chosen Tripp Lite's SMART3000RM2U SmartPro UPS Systems to ensure reliable power in its autonomous ground vehicles for the 2007 Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Urban Challenge.
“Tripp Lite is a trusted name in the power protection industry and was an easy choice when considering a UPS solution,” stated Alison Kubiak, senior mechanical engineer and Urban Challenge Student Organization team president. “In order for our vehicles to succeed at the Urban Challenge, vital components including sensors, servers and controllers need to stay powered, and the SMART3000-RM2U UPS system fits the bill with excellent power management features, a compact form factor and a large battery capacity.”
The DARPA Urban Challenge is an autonomous vehicle research and development program with the goal of developing technology that will keep warfighters off the battlefield and out of harm's way. The Urban Challenge features autonomous ground vehicles that are required to navigate in and around an urban environment using unmanned, remotely controlled technology. Sixty-eight teams representing seven countries will be participating in the event.
The 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge consists of a series of qualification rounds, with the final competition on Nov. 3.
