Symbian OS Runs Latest Nokia Phone
The newly announced Nokia N96 multimedia computer/mobile phone is based on S60 and Symbian OS v9.3, the latest shipped version of the Symbian operating system (OS). Optimized for convergence, the software includes performance and feature enhancements that greatly improve power efficiency and platform security for mobile phones.
The OS incorporates a system defense mechanism based on granting and monitoring application capabilities. It also has infrastructure to allow applications to have private protected data stores. Other security features include full encryption and certificate management, secure protocols, and a wireless identification module (WIM) framework.
The software supports the latest CPU architectures, peripherals (with USB On-the-Go client support), and internal and external memory types. It accommodates Internet e-mail based on Post Office Protocol (POP3), Internet Message Access Protocol, and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, including attachment support.
The Nokia N96 boasts live TV, a 5-Mpixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, turn-by-turn voice navigation, 16 Gbytes of internal memory that can be increased to 24 Gbytes with an optional microSD card, superior sound and music, N-Gage gaming, and a 2.8-in. display. The TV includes a program guide and interactive service, as well as 30-s replay capability. As a multimedia computer, the N96 features 3D stereo speakers, an integrated A-GPS, and Nokia maps.
