Lenovo Licenses Spark For Skylight Smartbooks
Lenovo has licensed the Spark video decoder from Sorenson Media for its Skylight smartbooks. According to Sorenson, Spark will enable the Skylight to play the widest selection of videos available on the Internet. The optimized decoder is available on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset.
Spark was the first codec used in Macromedia Flash, now Adobe Flash, which is today’s de facto standard for Web video. Sorenson says that Spark is the industry’s most ubiquitous video decoder, enabling the playback of hundred of millions of Internet videos, including many of those on YouTube.
The Skylight boasts a high-definition 10-in. screen and more than 10 hours of active battery life. It has built-in Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, seamlessly moving between both modes. Its user interface includes more than 18 preloaded Web gadgets. Based on the Snapdragon chipset, it offers 20 Gbytes of standard flash and 2 Gbytes of cloud storage.
The 1-GHz Snapdragon includes a 600-MHz DSP. It integrates 3G mobile broadband and supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Also, it offers high-definition (720p) video decode and multiple video codec support. It supports multiple audio codecs, mobile broadcast TV, and Windows Mobile, Android, and a number of Linux-based operating systems as well.
