Quad-band polar EDGE PA module delivers high power

Anadigics, Inc. has unveiled a quad-band polar EDGE power amplifier (PA) module for 3G wireless handsets and equipment. The new AWE6174 is designed to meet all requirements for GSM/GPRS and EDGE operations in dual-, tri- or quad-band handsets based on Qualcomm’s WCDMA, HSPA chipsets and their latest generation transceivers. The polar EDGE PA module includes separate amplifiers for GSM850/900 and for DCS/PCS bands which are optimized for high performance in both GMSK and 8PSK modes in a 6 x 6 mm package that is 25% smaller than current generation EDGE PA modules, according to Anadigics. Besides two separate HBT amplifier chains, the module also includes a multi-function CMOS block.

An internal reference voltage and integrated power control scheme for simplified GMSK operation make production calibration faster and easier and reduce the number of external components required, said the supplier. In addition, it gives handset designers the option of using an external DC-DC converter to modulate the amplifier bias voltage and reduce current consumption at backed off output power, said Anadigics.

The AWE6174 incorporates proprietary InGaP-Plus technology for state-of-the-art reliability, temperature stability and ruggedness. The PA is manufactured using a material set consistent with the EU’s RoHS. And all RF ports are internally matched to 50 Ohms.

Product sampling of the AWE6174 amplifier is scheduled for the end of this quarter, said Anadigics.
