Receiver modules expedite integration of GPS into systems

Global positioning system (GPS) solutions provider Navman Wireless OEM Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Navman Wireless Holdings, has unwrapped two new GPS receiver modules, the Jupiter 31 and the Jupiter 130. Combining SiRFStarIII performance with advanced functionality and capabilities, the new models expand Navman Wireless’ already extensive range of GPS solutions and provides designers with more product development options than ever before, asserted Navman Wireless.

As per the developer, Jupiter 31 single-board module brings the latest in GPS signal acquisition and advanced power management performance to existing system designs, allowing OEM manufacturers to develop powerful location specific products. This device offers optimal GPS operation capabilities in various signal strength environments, including indoors and other low-signal areas, noted the maker. Plus, continued Navman, it delivers a wider operating voltage range and greater noise rejection than competitors offering similar architectures.

Based on Jupiter 30 design, the Jupiter 130 provides an upgrade path to the SiRFStarIII chipset and faster integration of GPS functionality into manufacturers’ systems without the effort of antenna integration, noted the supplier. Jupiter 130 features an on-board 20-channel GPS receiver with integrated patch antenna, eliminating the need for an external RF antenna, and uses its own PCB for the ground plane for optimal gain, said Navman Wireless. The device provides fast time-to-fix and superior performance in all conditions including densely built cities, heavy foliage and enclosed spaces, added Navman.

“The new Jupiter 31 and 130 modules expand our product line and give OEMs more options for their designs,” said George Arnott, vice president Global OEM Solutions, Navman Wireless. “Our extensive product offering makes it easy for our customers to select the right devices to meet their GPS needs and develop the best solutions for their markets.”

Similarly, Jupiter 31 exploits Jupiter 21 architecture to offer a number of substantial performance and sensitivity enhancements. Key features of the GPS receiver module include low-power SiRFStarIII GSC3e/LP technology and power management options for minimal power consumption in all conditions. Other features include increased sensitivity (> -159 dBm); greater noise rejection; advanced algorithms for optimal performance; faster GPS acquisition than competitive products in low signal strength areas; and the option of using either an active or passive antenna. Operating specifications include a temperature range of –40 °C to 85 °C, an altitude range of -305 to 18,000 meters and 95% non-condensing humidity. The device weighs 25 grams, has a 41 x 71 x 10 mm form factor and meets FCC Part 15 (class B), EN 55022 (class B) and RoHS specifications.

The Jupiter 130 is a 20-channel GPS module with over 200,000 effective correlators. Also featuring the SiRFStarIII GSC3e/LP chipset, the Jupiter 130 is a highly accurate 3.3v module that incorporates a fully-integrated, embedded antenna and carrier-aided tracking in a 30 x 30 x 8 mm form factor. Hot start acquisition performance is one second and cold start performance is typically 34 seconds. Operating specifications include a temperature range of –10 °C to 60 °C, an altitude range of -305 to 18,000 meters and 95% non-condensing humidity.

Featuring the latest advancement in multi-mode aiding, both the Jupiter 31 and Jupiter 130 support ephemeris push. Effectively assuring hot start performance at all times including weak conditions and moving starts, ephemeris push enables the uploading of live ephemeris data to the receiver from application servers, commented the supplier. The ephemeris is typically valid for four hours until the live ephemeris is downloaded or new ephemeris data is provided, added Navman.

The Navman Wireless Jupiter 31 is currently shipping in production quantities, and the Jupiter 130 GPS receiver modules are available in sample quantities now with production in June. The Jupiter 31 is offered in 3.3 V and 5.0 V models as well as several antenna connector type configurations, according to the manufacturer.
