Symbian Foundation, CMCC Collaborate On Ecosystem Improvement
China Mobile Communications Corp. (CMCC) and the Symbian Foundation will collaborate on a series of initiatives to improve the mobile ecosystem in China while stimulating the market development for CMCC’s locally developed 3G network standard, TD-SCDMA. The partnership also marks the launch of Symbian’s Chinese Web site, Symbian’s broader focus on the Chinese market, and CMCC’s support of the Symbian Foundation.
The first initiative will simplify Symbian Signed testing services for developers submitting applications to CMCC’s Mobile Market application store. With these services, CMCC will be able to give mobile developers a one-stop facility for testing, signing, and publishing their Symbian-based applications. More than 50% of the Mobile Market’s 2000 applications are based on the Symbian platform. Mobile Market also will support applications published via Symbian’s Horizon application publishing program.
Symbian has guaranteed its support for CMCC’s plans to strengthen its TD-SCDMA 3G network and to facilitate the Symbian ecosystem in its development of Symbian-based TD-SCDMA devices that will bring the benefits of a 3G network to the operator’s millions of subscribers in the future. The new Chinese site, www.symbian.org/cn, is designed to promote and support the adoption of the Symbian platform in the region. Further, the foundation will establish an office and local operation in Beijing.
According to the foundation, interest in it and in the Symbian platform from developers and partners in the region is increasing. For example, China has the second highest number of full foundation members, with more than 10% of all Symbian members located in the region. The U.S. has the most members, with the U.K. and Japan tied for third. And prior to the launch of the Chinese Web site, more registrants and visitors to the English site came from China than from any other country. Registrants from the U.S. and India ranked second and third, respectively.
