Text Messages Surpass Phone Calls

There are a lot of tired thumbs out there. According to Nielsen Mobile, a service of the Nielsen Company, the typical U.S. mobile subscriber sent or recevived 357 text messages per month, as of the second quarter of 2008. That same user also placed or receieved an average of 204 phone calls per month.

That quarter was the second consecutive quarter in which the average number of text messages was significantly higher than the average number of phone calls. The number of calls has remained steady over the past two years, while the number of text messages has jumped by 450%.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the typical teen mobile subscriber in the U.S. (age 13 to 17) now sends or receives an average of 1742 text messages per month, compared to making or receiving 231 mobile phone calls.
