Variable gain 0.4 to 3 GHz amplifiers operate over a 40 dB range
Hittite Microwave Corporation, a supplier of MMIC-based solutions for communication and military markets, has added two variable gain amplifiers (VGAs) to its product line. These devices are well suited for use in test and measurement, and in military radio systems where accurate signal level control and high linearity is required.
The HMC640LP5E is a GaAs MMIC analog-variable gain amplifier that delivers a gain control range of 40 dB and an output 1 dB compression point of +23 dBm. Its consistent output third-order intercept point of +40 dBm makes the HMC640LP5E a good choice for transceivers that operate between 0.4 and 3 GHz. The HMC640LP5E provides the user the flexibility of choosing 20 dB or 40 dB of dynamic range depending on the user's requirement. In addition it is possible to configure the HMC640LP5E in a closed-loop circuit topology for continuous gain control.
Alternatively the HMC628LP4E is a 1 dB LSB GaAs MMIC, 5-bit digital variable gain amplifier that delivers a 23 dB selectable gain range and an output 1 dB compression point of +19.5 dBm. Its gain accuracy is ±0.05 dB below 250 MHz and ±0.4 dB up to 800 MHz. The maximum gain achieved is 14 dB with a noise figure of 5 dB. The HMC628LP4E incorporates a dual-mode interface that is CMOS/TLL compatible and can be controlled by either a three-wire serial input or a five-bit parallel word. The HMC628LP4E features a user-selectable, power-up state and a serial output port for configuring in cascade with other Hittite serial-controlled components.
Housed in a 5 x5 mm RoHS-compliant QFN leadless package, the HMC640LP5E requires no external matching components. The HMC628LP4E is also housed in a 4 x 4 mm RoHS-compliant QFN leadless package. Both devices are specified for operation over -40°C to +85°C. Samples are available from stock.
