Wayport, Inc., a leading provider of public and private network support and integration for innovative healthcare facilities, has announced its agreement with Inova Health System, an award-winning, not-for-profit health care organization, to provide wireless Internet access throughout its five hospital locations.

The Wi-Fi Internet access will be available throughout each hospital, and can be used by patients, doctors, staff and visitors. Users can connect for a nominal fee on an hourly basis and paid membership plans for unlimited usage will also be available. Wayport will also install public PC units (the Wayport CyberCenter Express) in the hospitals, which can be accessed by the public.

“We are excited to offer wireless Internet services to enhance our patients’ and guests’ experience,” said Geoff Brown, chief information officer, Inova Health System. “With Wayport’s network experience and management we are able to offer a modern convenience with highly reliable service and support.”

Challenges faced by hospitals offering Wi-Fi include ensuring the connection process is fast and simple, yet highly secure, and keeping users and the network protected from the threat of viruses and worms. With the assistance of Wayport, Inova can run wireless hospital applications and provide guest access on the same robust network, all while maintaining HIPAA compliance and internal security. Wayport will also provide 24x7x365 support for anyone who needs assistance connecting to the wireless network.

“Inova Health System shows great innovation in their approach of leveraging technology to enhance patient care as well as improve the patient and guest experience,” said Kevin McKeand, vice president and general manager, Wayport healthcare. “They will offer a first rate experience for patients, visitors, physicians and staff by ensuring that each user is well supported, that the network is secure and reliable and that all services are consistently maintained over time.”
