China Mobile has selected T3G, ST-Ericsson’s company in China, as a major technology partner for the development of its high-end and low-cost handsets based on the TD-SCDMA 3G standard. ST-Ericsson also will support four of its customers to commercialize their mobile phones through 2010.

Under the agreement, ST-Ericsson will develop a new low-cost platform to support its customers to offer affordable TD-SCDMA devices to consumers in China. ST-Ericsson also will support customers to develop high-end mobile phones based on existing and new platforms such as the T7210, which will enable consumers to enjoy high-speed broadband and multimedia services.

“Although ST-Ericsson is a recent joint venture, our subsidiary T3G has been actively developing platforms for the mobile standard for more than six years, achieving an impressive record of world firsts in bringing innovation to China,” said Alain Dutheil, president and CEO of ST-Ericsson.

“Our dedicated local R&D team, as well as out strong commitment to continuous innovation and close cooperation with customers, will enable China Mobile to offer a broad range of handsets for the mass market as well as for the high-end segment,” Dutheil continued.

The T7210 mobile platform supports TD-SCDMA dual-band in 2010- to 2025-MHz and 1880- to 1920-MHz frequencies. In China’s TD-SCDMA deployment plans, the 2010- to 2025-MHz band will be used for the construction of a nationwide network offering voice and low-speed data services, while the 1880- to 1920-MHz band will be used for high-speed data services over TD-HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+.

Also, the T7210 has successfully completed handovers of voice and high-speed data services to operate optimally in Chinese dual-band network environments, like 2.8-Mbit/s HSDPA and TD-MBMS. Built around a 208-MHz ARM926EJ processor, it integrates USB 2.0 GS device connectivity and MMC/SD/T-Flash card support. Proven extensions for Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, AGPS, and FM radio are available as well.
