Companies Collaborate On Low-Cost Multimode 4G Handset
HelloSoft, Comsys Mobile, and dmedia will develop a low-cost, integrated WiMAX/GSM-EDGE/Wi-Fi phone. The handset will combine HelloSoft’s Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and convergence suite running on its low-cost, ultra-low-power HS100 IP Convergence Processor with Comsys Mobile’s ComMAX CM1125 multimode WiMAX/GSM-EDGE communication processor. The handset is slated for release later this year.
“The market has a need for low-cost tri-mode phones supporting WiMAX, GSM, and Wi-Fi to meet the demand in both emerging markets and also mature markets where GSM is essential,” said Ronny Gorlicki of Comsys Mobile EVP Sales. “4G capabilities bring unheard of high-speed wireless data on the go to mobile users, and integrating GSM allows a wide range of consumers to upgrade their existing GSM handset to 4G.”
“WiMAX service providers around the world have been seeking a compelling low bill-of-materials (BOM) 4G handset with which to launch voice services as a complementary overlay that leverages the existing and newly deployed 4G networks,” said Allan Johnson, senior VP of marketing and business development at HelloSoft. “To do this successfully requires the ubiquity of GSM together with the data offload and VoIP capability of 4G.”
The HS100 IP Convergence Platform phone-on-a-chip integrates a 366-MHz ARM9E processor, dual-band WLAN 802.11abg, a hardware security engine, best-in-class quality-of-service (QoS), and all peripherals required for a powerful and multimedia-capable low-BOM multi-mode device with long battery life, HelloSoft says. It’s based on the company’s patented SmartWLAN technology and in-house, complete convergence software suite.
Dynamic frequency and voltage scaling reduce power consumption. The HS100 also supports UMA and interfaces for 2G/3G/4G (LTE/WiMAX) connectivity and co-existence algorithms. It supports advanced specifications for seamless roaming between Wi-Fi access points and across multiple access networks. And, it bundles Hello-Software’s VoIP, IMS, voice call continuity, intelligent connection manager, and data session connectivity software.
The ComMAX CM1125 is a full Mobile WiMAX/cellular baseband processor that integrates GSM/EDGE cellular with Mobile WiMAX, providing significant size, power, and cost savings, Comsys says. It implements the complete Mobile WiMAX physical layer (PHY) and media access controller (MAC) layer in accordance with the WiMAX Forum wave 2 profiles. Also, it includes a complete GSM/EDGE implementation as well as a multi-standard aware protocol stack.
Further, the CM1125 is complemented by an optimized multimode reference design platform with a suite of debugging tools and an extensive documentation set, streamlining customization and enabling accelerated time-to-market, Comsys says. It supports full mobility, including high vehicular speeds, and 64-QAM for downlinks and uplinks. It fully complies with WiMAX Forum, 3GPP, GCF, and PTCRB requirements as well.
