FCC Blesses Qualcomm Sale Of 700-MHz Licenses

Qualcomm Inc. says it now has the “go ahead” from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the sale of its lower 700-MHz D and E Block (Channel 55 and 56) unpaired U.S. spectrum licenses to AT&T. The $1.925 billion sale, announced in December 2010, has been in limbo pending resolution of certain closing conditions. AT&T intends to deploy this chunk of spectrum as supplemental downlink, using carrier aggregation technology to deliver greater capacity gains by enabling unpaired spectrum for use with paired spectrum for 4G services. On the same wavelength and with eyes on the global arena, Qualcomm is integrating carrier aggregation technology for supplemental downlink into its chipsets.
