IEEE 802.16m Gets IMT-Advanced Thumbs Up
Anticipating its position as the first IMT-Advanced technology on the market, the WiMAX Forum now recognizes the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) approval of WirelessMAN-Advanced technology within IEEE 802.16m as an IMT-Advanced technology. The unanimous agreement follows precise evaluation and a consensus-building process after the introduction of proposals in October 2009. These include evaluating reports from nine expert groups worldwide.
Along with finalizing IEEE 802.16m, the forum is completing the in-depth spec of WiMAX Release 2, which will ensure that WiMAX Release 2 networks and devices provide capabilities and efficiencies exceeding IMT-Advanced baseline requirements. WiMAX Release 2 incorporates these capabilities while offering higher Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capacity and spectral efficiency, lower latency, better handover speed, wider coverage areas, and support for wider operating bandwidth in both time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD) modes.
