4G LTE Services Invade U.S.
MetroPCS Communications has become the first mobile operator to launch commercial 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) services in the United States. The company will be delivering talk, text, and 4G Web access with prices starting at $55 per month including taxes and regulatory fees with no annual contracts. Service will initially be available in Las Vegas, Nev., expanding to other MetroPCS cities throughout the year.
Apps on tap for the 4G LTE network include RealNetworks-based MetroSTUDIOSM, a unique source for multimedia content; a social networking and instant messaging aggregation application that works with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other social networks; and an upgraded MetroNavigator feature with the addition of voice-activated GPS and turn-by-turn directions.
As MetroPCS rolls out the world’s first commercial 4G LTE network in Las Vegas, it also is offering the Samsung Craft, which it calls the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE handset.

The Craft boasts a 3.3-in. active-matrix organic LED (AMOLED) screen, a 2-Gbyte microSD card preloaded with the 2009 movie Star Trek, a combination touchscreen/slide-out QWERTY keyboard with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface, and a 3.2-Mpixel camera with flash and camcorder.
