Oregon ISP Launches First HSPA+ Network
BendBroadband launched what it says is the nation’s fastest wireless data network. The service is the first U.S. deployment of High Speed Access Plus (HSPA+) wireless network standard, and it is upgradable to the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) standard. It is only available in central Oregon.
The network is capable of delivering speeds of 15 Mbits/s under optimal conditions, with average download speeds between 6 and 8 Mbits/s, depending on the customer’s location. The new service also offers mobile broadband when customers use a USB device that can access the network from most locations in central Oregon. Home and business users must purchase a fixed location modem from the company that includes a wireless router.
Some customers who currently live in areas that can’t access traditional coaxial cable networks will be able to access the network, BendBroadband says. The company also plans to offer a telephone service in early 2010.
The Internet service will range from $39.99 to $74.99 per month, depending on the bundled plan customers choose. The telephone plans available next year will range from $18.99 to $38.99 per month and include optional features such as unlimited local and long-distance calling and voicemail.
