WJ Communications Inc. announced four products for WiMAX/WiBro applications. The new series includes AH314/AH315, high-linearity 2 W 2-stage driver amplifiers, and AP561/AP562, high-performance 8 W single-stage power amplifiers. The AH314/AH315 products are readily available, while the AP561/AP562 will be available for sampling in January 2008 with production in March 2008.

The company states that these amplifiers are ideal for use in WiMAX/WiBro applications at the commonly targeted sub-bands within the 2.3 - 2.9 GHz and 3.3 - 3.8 GHz frequency ranges. All four amplifiers are based on the highly reliable InGaP/GaAs HBT process technology, and incorporate proprietary bias circuitry to compensate for variations in linearity and current draw over temperature. An internal active bias allows the AH314/5 to operate at single +5 V, while the AP561/2 internal active bias allows them to operate at +12 V with an added feature of a +5 V power down control pin.

The AH314 is a two-stage amplifier with 23 dB gain operating between 2.3 and 2.9 GHz, while the AH315 has 25 dB gain operating between 3.3 and 3.8 GHz. Both amplifiers offer +25 dBm linear output power with less than 2.5% error vector magnitude (EVM), and with greater than 2W of compressed 1 dB power. Key characteristics of both amplifiers are very low EVM at highly power backoff conditions as well as having very good gain flatness – less than 0.2 dB over a 100 MHz window. The AH314/5 are ideal for WiMAX/WiBro base transceiver station (BTS) applications requiring linearity margin prior to the final stage amplifiers in the system.

The AP561 offers 12 dB gain and operates across 2.3 - 2.9 GHz band, while the AP562 offers 12 dB gain across 3.3 - 3.8 GHz operating range. These amplifiers deliver greater than 1W linear power at <2.5% EVM with +39 dBm of 1 dB compressed output power. At 1W linear power, the amplifiers will also have 13% power-added efficiency (PAE) meeting the needs for ultra-efficient systems. The high output linear power and efficiency allows the AP561/2 to be targeted ideally used for outdoor customer premise equipment (CPE) applications.

All four amplifiers are targeted for use with high-performance WiMAX/WiBro CPE and/or BTS applications. The AH314 and AP561 are targeted for operation between 2.3 - 2.9 GHz, while the AH315 and AP562 are targeted for operation between 3.3 - 3.8 GHz. The AH314/5 are ideally used as the driver amplifier immediately after the direct modulator or transceiver chipset, while the AP561/2 can be used for single-ended or balanced configurations to achieve higher output power levels.
