FreeNET voice-over Wi-Fi solution

Ascom (U.S.) Inc. has announced that the Ascom FreeNET VoWiFi portfolio is now certified for interoperability with Trapeze Smart Mobile wireless LAN infrastructure. Combining Ascom’s FreeNET VoWiFi solution and its portfolio of mission-critical communication applications with Trapeze Smart Mobile, dramatically improves the productivity of a large body of highly mobile workers in healthcare, retail, eucation, manufacturing, warehousing and other industries.

While cellular service is often patchy in many indoor environments, the Trapeze/Ascom combination delivers reliable enterprise-wide voice services with unified messaging. The result is total mobility with the ability to respond immediately and solve problems quickly, without wasting resources.

The Ascom FreeNET standards-based solution consists of market-specific VoWiFi portable handsets with direct SIP connection or optional VoIP gateway for integration to an existing circuit-switched PBX. In addition, FreeNET supports IEEE standards, including 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11e (quality of service), and 802.11i (security). The Ascom i75 handset is the industry’s most robust VoWiFi handset, offering many unique advantages, and full compliance with the latest IEEE 802.11 and Wi-Fi Alliance standards.

Providing the lowest latency and most efficient traffic flows for voice-over Wi-Fi, Trapeze Smart Mobile technology overcomes all the limitations of current-generation WLANs by allowing voice traffic to be locally switched at the access point, instead of requiring a latency-inducing round-trip through a centralized WLAN controller. Unlike the one-size-fits-all centralized forwarding approach of other WLAN infrastructure vendors, Trapeze’s Smart Mobile combines centralized and distributed data forwarding based on the requirements of the underlying application. This results in higher performance and increased application scalability —all without the high cost of upgrading WLAN controllers.
