Xirrus wins Wi-Fi deployment throughout Boulder Valley School District
Xirrus is deploying a high-performing Wi-Fi network for all of the 55 schools in the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD). BVSD is comprised of 29 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, 10 high schools and six multilevel schools that are supported by 4,200 employees servicing more than 28,000 students.
The district-wide deployment is part of an overall infrastructure upgrade that includes a high-speed wide area network, voice-over IP implementation, and a video distribution system allowing educators to further enrich the district’s curriculum through distance learning, e-learning and the distribution of educational video content directly to students using laptops in the classroom.
The Xirrus Wi-Fi network deployment has already started at the district’s headquarters and at Columbine Elementary School with the entire district expected to be completed within the next several months. In addition to offering wireless access throughout each school, the Xirrus Wi-Fi network will also provide residents of the local communities with free hotspot Wi-Fi Internet access.
“Our legacy Wi-Fi network used thin access points and controllers and couldn’t handle the density or flash traffic patterns that were occurring in our classrooms,” said David Williamson, CIO of BVSD. “We looked at several different options and we found that Xirrus’ solution provided the most coverage and capacity per cable drop allowing us to support a wide variety of educational enrichment applications and to better serve our community.”
Well-known as a technology leader among Colorado school districts, BVSD is upgrading its network infrastructure with advanced security measures including individual active directory accounts for every student enabling the district to offer e-mail accounts to all elementary, middle and high school students assuming parental permission.
“Xirrus is well positioned to handle the requirements of leading organizations like Boulder Valley School District and we’re excited to be a part of their complete infrastructure upgrade,” said Alan Amrod, vice president of sales and marketing at Xirrus. “BVSD can now provide a state-of-the-art wireless network for their students and the surrounding communities capable of supporting a wide range of educational tools both now and in the future.”
