Renesas Mobile’s MP5232 single-chip, high-performance, scalable smart-phone platform is designed to accelerate the development and delivery of high-volume smart phones, tablets, and other mobile Internet devices capable of LTE/HSPA+ ranging from $200 to $400.

The MP5232 sets new benchmarks in integration and performance for fully featured high-volume LTE devices. At the heart of the chip, the company’s SP2531 mobile modem delivers the industry’s highest throughput as well as low-power multi-mode frequency-division duplex (FDD) and time-division duplex Long-Term Evolution (TDD-LTE) Category 4 capabilities.

Combined with a state-of-the-art application processor, the platform delivers multicore computing power, exceptional graphics, video, and imaging capabilities. It also includes advanced RF transceivers, power management, and audio solutions. It’s delivered fully tested and certified to enable customers to bring new generations of fully featured LTE/HSPA+ smart phones to market in as little as six to nine months.

The MP5232 addresses the two leading LTE handset design issues: high cost and high power consumption. LTE can grow faster with less expensive smart phones and longer battery life.

Full multiband and multimode capabilities enable HSPA fallback and worldwide roaming.

The basic architecture comprises dual-core ARM Cortex A9 applications processors (1.5 GHz) and an LTE baseband processor that implements LTE Category 4 (150-Mbit/s downlink and 50-Mbit/s uplink) and DC-HSPA+ (dual-cell high-speed packet access with 42-Mbit/s downlink and 11.5-Mbit/s uplink) multimode operation.

Furthermore, the MP5232 supports differentiating features including multi-camera and multi-display support, full HD 1080p multi-format video encoding/decoding, stereoscopic 3D (S3D) video, and advanced graphics to deliver console-like gaming experiences and engaging user interfaces.

Samples of the MP5232 platform are available now with full production scheduled for the first quarter of 2013. Reference designs together with supporting documentation, software, and hardware also are available to OEMs.
