RFID transceiver IC goes to production

Melexis, a supplier of RFID transceivers, is taking its versatile 13.56 MHz RFID transceiver IC, MLX90121, to production. This low-power consumption RFID transceiver targets applications such as portable data terminals, access control readers, contact-less payment terminals and smart label printers. The MLX90121 consists of an analog front-end associated to a digital pre-processor, which handles ASK, FSK and PSK demodulation and data encoding.

The MLX90121 conforms to ISO/IEC14443A/B and ISO/IEC15693 standards and provides support for non-ISO/IEC-compliant applications. The MLX90121 will be further upgraded later this year to accommodate the higher data rates of the ISO/IEC standards, as well as to fully support the Near Field Communication (NFC) protocol.

The MLX90121 is available now in volume production together with an evaluation board and a development kit to speed up the development cycle at the customer site. The device is offered in a 0 to 70°C version and a -40 to 85°C version in the industry-standard SSOP20 pin package for surface-mount manufacturing. Estimated pricing for the MLX90121 will be $3 at 50,000 pieces.
