Research Alliance Targets TD-LTE Testing Technology

Article Tools

The China Mobile Research Institute, which is the R&D division of China Mobile, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rohde & Schwarz to collaborate on research investigating Time Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE) testing technology and test system development.

TD-LTE, which is the time division duplex (TDD) version of the LTE standard, is designed to enable high-speed mobile Internet access. The Global Mobile Suppliers Association expects TD-LTE to achieve a significant share of the worldwide LTE market. According to Rohde & Schwarz, support for TD-LTE is increasing in the Asia-Pacific region as well as in Europe and America, with the backing of more than 70 companies from across the mobile industry.

When it comes to terminal testing, China Mobile is leading the project group TD-LTE Work Items (WI) within the Global Certification Forum for conformance testing, covering protocol, RF, and radio resource management (RRM). China Mobile is now cooperating with other operators and test system vendors to develop network-simulator independent operating test (IOT) systems to set up end-to-end testing solutions and simulate end-user experiences.

Rohde & Schwarz offers RF conformance tests, RRM testing, project quality assurance, signaling conformance tests, protocol, and call box solutions in TD-LTE. Its joint effort with the China Mobile Research Institute will seek to establish an end-to-end TD-LTE testing environment with the ultimate goal of robust networks and high-quality terminals.
