TD-LTE Femto Basestation Features Verified

The Applied Science and Technology Reserarch Institute (ASTRI) of Hong Kong has successfully verified its TD-LTE femto basestations using equipment provided by Rohde & Schwarz. In accordance with the latest 3GPP specification, TS36.141, transmitter and receiver characteristics as well as receiver performance under fading conditions must be tested. As part of the verification process, ASTRI and R&S tested the HARQ and timing-advance functionality of the basestations under real-time conditions for the first time.

ASTRI used the Rohde & Schwarz R&S AMU 200 A baseband signal generator (a) and the R&S SMU 200A RF signal generator to generate TD-LTE signals and verify its TD-LTE femto basestations.

To generate TD-LTE signals, R&S uses the R&S AMU 200A baseband signal generator or the R&S SMU 200A RF signal generator (see the figure). For conformance testing, the LTE real-time uplink feedback option is now available for both instruments. Designed by ASTRI using picoChip’s platform, the femto basestation under test sends a real-time feedback in line with 3GPP specifications to the generator.

This way, the HARQ and the timing-advance functionality can be verified for the uplink. Both functions are needed to simulate the correct feedback behavior between the basestation and the terminal. It’s also possible to determine the current data throughput that the basestation achieves under defined fading conditions. This throughput is a measure of the basestation’s receiver performance.
